Is it safe to sleep next to a fireplace?

I just wanna know if its okay for my health if I sleep about a foot lower than a near fireplace. I've heard that you can get poisoned by the Carbon-Monoxide or embers can fly out and catch fire to the sleeping bag. Would it be safe?
