In Lucky Number Slevin why does Slevin need to pretend he was mugged and get Goodkat to break his nose?

Was it so that Lindsey would think Nick had set him up and stolen his ID so that the mobsters would think Slevin was Nick? If so, I don't see why, because he didn't know he would even meet Lindsey.
